Most pest bird species- particularly feral pigeons and Indian mynas- begin scoping and defending nesting sites weeks before they actually start building. By the time you see a nest, the birds have already committed to the location. That’s why July and early August is exactly when to act.

Why July and August matter more than any other time of year
Here’s something we’ve learned over ten-plus years of bird control work across Sydney: the difference between a manageable bird problem and a serious one often comes down to timing. Specifically, whether a property was proofed before the first nest was built, or after.
Pigeons are creatures of habit in a way that’s genuinely remarkable. Once a pair has successfully nested at a location- laid eggs, raised chicks, and left- they treat that site as home. They’ll return the following season, often earlier. Their offspring, raised in that location, develop the same loyalty to it. A single unmanaged season can turn one pair into a semi-permanent colony within two to three breeding cycles.
Pre-season proofing breaks this cycle entirely. When birds arrive at their preferred site in August and find it physically inaccessible, they don’t become more aggressive- they move on and find another location. The longer the physical barrier has been in place, the more definitively the location is ‘written off’ from the bird’s memory. We see this play out consistently: clients who install mesh or netting in winter rarely call us the following spring with a new problem.
Conversely, clients who wait until October or November- when they can see the nests and hear the chicks- face an extra complication. Under the NSW Biodiversity Conservation Act 2016, active nests of protected native species cannot be disturbed. The pre-season checklist: what to inspect on your property
Work through this section by section. The goal is to identify every place on your property that could become an attractive nesting or roosting site. Don’t assume that because you haven’t had birds there before, you won’t. Bird populations shift, territories expand, and a building that was previously unattractive can become a prime target when nearby sites are proofed.
Solar panels
The cavity beneath solar panels is the number one nesting site for feral pigeons across Greater Sydney. It’s warm, elevated, sheltered from rain, and largely undisturbed. If you have solar panels and haven’t had them proofed, check whether there’s any gap between the panel frames and the roof surface. Even a gap of three to four centimetres is enough for a pigeon to squeeze through.
Signs of existing activity: droppings running from under the panels down the roof slope; feathers or nesting material visible at the edges; scratching or cooing sounds in the morning. If any of these are present, the nest assessment needs to happen before installation- to identify whether existing nesting material needs removal and whether wiring has been disturbed.
Roof eaves, soffits and fascia gaps
Walk the perimeter of your home or building and look for any gaps in the eaves or soffit lining. These are particularly common on older terrace houses across the Inner West, semi-detached homes on the North Shore, and townhouses in Western Sydney where the original soffit material has warped or cracked with age. Any opening larger than a couple of centimetres is a potential entry point for sparrows, starlings, Indian mynas and, on occasion, smaller pigeon species.
This is one of the most overlooked inspection areas. Roof cavities that become bird nesting sites create a cascade of problems: fire risk from nesting material near electrical systems, mite and parasite migration into the living space, and water damage from nest material holding moisture against timber. The cost of sealing a soffit gap is trivial compared to what an established roof cavity nest can cost to remediate.
Balcony ledges, railings and air conditioning units
Balconies are one of the most common bird problem sites we deal with, particularly in apartment buildings across the Eastern Suburbs, Inner West, and North Shore. The combination of an elevated, sheltered ledge and proximity to food sources (outdoor dining, nearby bins, parks) makes them irresistible to pigeons.
Check the top of balcony railings, any protruding ledges, the surface of air conditioning compressor units, and any overhang sections where a bird could tuck in and feel sheltered. Commercial buildings: loading docks, warehouse rafters, signage
For commercial properties, the inspection scope is considerably broader. Loading docks with open roller doors provide direct access to warm, sheltered interior spaces. Exposed warehouse rafters are a classic pigeon roosting environment. Signage with internal cavities or top-mount frames creates sheltered ledges that pigeons find extremely attractive.
Facilities managers should walk the entire exterior and, where safe access permits, the interior roofline of any building with open access during business hours. The audit should note every potential roosting point, not just the ones where birds are currently present.
Here’s the part most guides skip.
None of this matters if you can’t distinguish between a property that needs proofing now and one that needs it urgently. A few nesting materials in a gutter is a different situation from a solar panel cavity that’s been actively used for two breeding seasons. The inspection tells you where you are. The professional assessment tells you what to do about it, in what order, and with what method.
The right solution for each situation
Not every bird problem needs the same fix. This is something we’re direct about with every client: a site assessment exists precisely because a 23-panel solar installation on a double-storey house in Castle Hill is a materially different job from a balcony netting installation for a Newtown apartment. The solution follows the problem.
That said, there are some consistent patterns:
Solar panels consistently call for purpose-engineered clip-on mesh- UV-stabilised, installed around the full panel perimeter without drilling into the panels or the roof surface, maintaining airflow and panel efficiency while physically blocking all access.
Balconies and open-face ledges- depending on the configuration- are typically addressed with stainless steel spikes on the landing surfaces, bird netting across any open face, or a combination of both. Stainless steel doesn’t rust, doesn’t crack in the Sydney sun, and doesn’t require annual replacement the way plastic alternatives do.
Roof eave and soffit gaps are a permanent exclusion job: seal the entry, check and remove any existing nest material, treat for any parasites present, and monitor for secondary access points.
Warehouses and commercial buildings typically involve a combination of netting across high-risk spans and spikes on perching surfaces, designed around operational requirements so that access for forklifts, machinery or staff is unaffected.
One thing we want to be clear about: DIY solutions are almost always a delay, not a fix. Plastic owl decoys stop working within days- pigeons in particular are intelligent enough to assess a static threat and dismiss it quickly. Reflective tape degrades and birds adapt to it. Gel repellents require repeated reapplication and create their own maintenance burden. Physical exclusion- correctly installed- is the only permanent solution. And ‘correctly installed’ is doing a lot of work in that sentence; a sagging net with gaps at the edges is not an exclusion barrier, it’s an obstacle course the birds will navigate within a week.
A note on protected species: what you need to know before July ends
Before we wrap up, one genuinely important point for anyone planning to do their own inspection or act on existing nesting.
In New South Wales, all native bird species are protected under the Biodiversity Conservation Act 2016. This means nests, eggs, and chicks of native species cannot be disturbed without a licence, regardless of whether the nest is on your property or creating a problem for your business. Feral pigeons and Indian mynas- both introduced pest species- are not protected and can be managed without a licence. But every other commonly seen Sydney bird- noisy miners, welcome swallows, magpies, corellas, cockatoos- falls under protection.
The practical implication: if you’re not certain of the species nesting at your property, don’t touch it until you’ve had a professional confirm what you’re dealing with. We see genuine species misidentification regularly- most commonly between the Indian myna (an introduced pest, not protected) and the noisy miner (a native honeyeater, fully protected). The birds look similar enough to cause real confusion, and the legal consequences of disturbing a protected species are not trivial.
Acting in July- before nesting season- mostly sidesteps this issue entirely, because you’re proofing sites before birds have committed to them, rather than removing active nests. This is another reason the pre-season window matters.
