Colorbond is everywhere in Sydney. Knock on doors in any Western Sydney suburb, drive through the Hills District, wander through any estate built in the last twenty years- the rooflines are almost uniformly the same: low-pitched, steel-sheeted, Colorbond. It’s practical, it’s durable, and under the right conditions, it’s an almost ideal nesting habitat for feral pigeons.

The gap between the panel frame and a Colorbond roof is slightly different from a tile installation. The surface behaves differently. The clip systems that work reliably on tile don’t necessarily translate directly to steel. And the most common mistake we see- from both DIY attempts and non-specialist installers- is treating a Colorbond installation like any other bird proofing job. It isn’t, quite.

This post is for Colorbond roof owners who have a bird problem– usually pigeons under solar panels, nesting in eave gaps, or roosting on ridge lines- and want to understand what the right approach actually looks like.

Why Colorbond roofs attract birds differently

The primary attraction is thermal. Colorbond absorbs and retains heat more effectively than terracotta or concrete tiles, which means the cavity space beneath a solar array on a Colorbond roof is measurably warmer than on a comparable tile installation. For pigeons, who prioritise warm, sheltered nesting sites, this makes a Colorbond roof with solar panels particularly attractive- especially in the cooler months leading into spring.

The secondary factor is surface smoothness. Colorbond’s profile, particularly the popular Trimdek and Klip-Lok ribbed systems, creates consistent channels along the roofline that birds use as landing and walking paths. Unlike irregular tile surfaces that can make perching less comfortable, the predictable geometry of Colorbond ribbing gives pigeons reliable footholds along gutterlines and ridges.

There’s also an access issue specific to Colorbond. The continuous steel sheet construction means fewer gaps than a tile roof- but the gaps that do exist, particularly around the edges of solar panel installations, penetrations for skylights, and the junction between the steel sheet and fascia, are often more consistent and more predictable than on a tile installation. Once a pigeon identifies that a specific edge profile allows entry, it will use it reliably every time.

What doesn’t work on Colorbond

Let’s be direct about a few common approaches that fail specifically on Colorbond, because this is where most of the wasted money goes.

Adhesive-based spike strips

Many DIY spike products and some professional installations use an adhesive base to fix spikes to a surface. On tiles, this works adequately. On Colorbond, the expansion and contraction cycle of steel sheet- which can move several millimetres over a temperature swing- causes adhesive bonds to shear within one to two seasons. The spikes detach. The birds return.

Drill-through mountings on the steel sheet

Drilling through Colorbond to mount bird exclusion hardware creates two problems. First, it voids the Colorbond warranty- BlueScope (the manufacturer) explicitly excludes damage arising from penetrations not made by the original installer. Second, drilled holes in steel sheet without proper flashing and sealing are a water infiltration point. We see this fairly regularly on older DIY jobs.

Lightweight netting without proper tensioning

Garden-centre bird netting, or even professional netting loosely installed without proper tensioning and edge sealing, sags under its own weight on a low-pitch Colorbond roof. Within a season, the sag creates gaps and birds nest inside the netting itself. We’ve removed nests from inside badly installed netting jobs on Colorbond roofs more than once.

What actually works: the right approach for Colorbond

Clip-on solar panel mesh using manufacturer-specific clips

For solar panels on Colorbond, the professional standard is a purpose-designed clip-on mesh system that attaches to the panel frame- not to the roof sheet itself. The clips grip the aluminium frame of the solar panel, leaving the Colorbond surface completely untouched. No drilling. No adhesive. No warranty issues.

The mesh is tensioned around the full perimeter of the panel array, with sealed corners and overlapping joins at any array edges. This approach is completely non-invasive for the Colorbond sheet and does not interact with the Klip-Lok or Trimdek profile in any way that would affect its structural or weathering performance. Mechanical stainless steel spikes on ridge lines and fascia

For ridge line perching and fascia-edge roosting on Colorbond roofs, stainless steel spike systems that mechanically fix to the ridge cap rather than the steel sheet are the right approach. Ridge caps on Colorbond installations are typically aluminium, which takes a screw fixing cleanly. The ridge cap itself is a replaceable component if needed.

Critically, the spike specification matters for Colorbond ridgelines. Pigeon spikes require a base width that matches the landing surface. The ridge cap on a Trimdek or Custom Orb Colorbond installation is narrower than a typical tile ridge, and the spike mounting needs to be configured accordingly. This is one of the technical details that non-specialists routinely get wrong.

Gap sealing at eave-to-fascia junctions

The eave-to-fascia junction on a Colorbond roof is one of the most common bird entry points we assess. On a tile roof, this junction is often sealed by the tile bedding. On Colorbond, the steel sheet terminates at the fascia and the junction is typically sealed with foam or barge capping. Over time- through UV degradation, thermal movement, or simply age- these seals can open up.

Sealing these gaps with appropriate materials- purpose-designed bird exclusion foam, stainless steel mesh inserts, or barge capping replacement- is a critical part of any Colorbond bird proofing program. If the gaps aren’t sealed, a perimeter mesh around the solar array won’t stop birds that are using the eave junction as their primary entry point.

The assessment is the critical first step

Every Colorbond roof bird proofing job we do starts with a proper assessment from roof level. The roof profile (Trimdek, Custom Orb, Klip-Lok, Spanline), the panel mounting system, the eave junction condition, the ridge cap configuration, and the specific bird behaviour all inform the solution.

Ridge caps are typically aluminium and take mechanical fixings cleanly. Adhesive-based systems on Colorbond are not recommended due to the thermal expansion and contraction cycle of steel roofing.

What profile of Colorbond is most common in Western Sydney?

Trimdek and Klip-Lok are the most common Colorbond profiles across Western Sydney, the Hills District, and newer residential estates across Greater Sydney. Custom Orb (corrugated) is more common in older homes and semi-rural properties. The bird proofing approach is slightly different for each profile, which is one reason a site assessment is essential before any installation.

I’ve already had a spike system installed on my Colorbond roof and the birds came back. Why?

The most common cause of spike system failure on Colorbond is incomplete coverage- birds find the uncovered surfaces adjacent to the spike strips and use those instead. The second most common cause is adhesive failure, where the spike base detached from the steel surface due to thermal movement. The right job, done once

Colorbond roofs are not difficult to bird-proof when you understand the specific requirements. The challenge is that many installers transfer their tile-based approach directly to steel without adjusting for the thermal movement, the surface profile, or the warranty implications. The result is a job that fails early and costs the property owner again.
