We want to be factually accurate about this, because there’s a tendency to either overstate the risk (‘pigeon droppings will kill you’) or dismiss it (‘it’s just bird poo, clean it up’). The reality is more specific.
Accumulated bird droppings- particularly large-scale accumulations in enclosed or semi-enclosed spaces- can harbour several pathogens:
- Histoplasma capsulatum: a fungal spore that causes histoplasmosis, a respiratory infection. The spores are present in pigeon guano globally and become airborne when dried droppings are disturbed. Most infections in healthy adults are mild or asymptomatic, but in immunocompromised individuals, the elderly, and young children, histoplasmosis can be serious.
- Cryptococcus neoformans: a fungal pathogen associated with cryptococcal disease. Also found in pigeon droppings and capable of becoming airborne when dry material is disturbed.
- Chlamydia psittaci: the bacteria responsible for psittacosis (also called ornithosis). Found in droppings and respiratory secretions of infected birds, capable of causing a flu-like illness in humans.
- Salmonella species: associated with bird droppings that contaminate food contact surfaces or food products.

A small amount of fresh droppings on an outdoor surface, cleaned promptly and with basic protective measures, presents a very different risk profile from a large accumulated deposit in a poorly ventilated roof cavity that has been building up over multiple seasons. The latter is the situation that requires professional assessment and remediation.
The practical risk is highest when:
- Dry droppings are disturbed by sweeping, blowing, or foot traffic (aerosolises spores)
- Droppings accumulate in poorly ventilated spaces such as roof cavities, solar panel undersides, or warehouse rafter areas

Why the sequence matters: cleanup before bird proofing
Here’s the part that most guides don’t spell out clearly: the sequence of cleanup and bird proofing is not arbitrary.
Bird proofing should come after cleanup, not instead of it. Installing a bird mesh system over solar panels that still have nest material and droppings underneath seals in the biological hazard rather than eliminating it. The accumulated material continues to decay under the panel, releasing spores and harbouring mites, now in a sealed cavity.

Why you shouldn’t do this yourself
We want to be direct about this rather than just recommend professional services because it sounds better for our business. The specific reason not to DIY bird dropping cleanup at scale is the aerosol risk.
Dry sweeping or dry blowing bird droppings- the most intuitive cleanup approach- generates exactly the type of airborne particle that carries Histoplasma spores. If you’re cleaning a small amount of fresh material on an outdoor surface with good air movement, the risk is very low. If you’re dealing with several seasons of accumulated material under solar panels, in a roof cavity, or in a warehouse rafter space, dry disturbance of that material without respiratory protection is a genuine health risk.
Professional cleanup uses wet methods: material is dampened before removal to prevent aerosolisation of dry particles. All personnel wear appropriate respiratory protection (P2 respirator minimum for confined spaces with significant accumulation), eye protection, and full body covering. Waste is bagged and disposed of as contaminated material.
For small amounts of bird droppings on outdoor hard surfaces, routine cleaning with a hose and disinfectant is appropriate. For accumulated material in confined spaces, professional remediation is the right approach.

Pre-treatment assessment
Before any disturbance of the accumulated material, the site is assessed for the extent of accumulation, any structural impact (acidic droppings can corrode metal and degrade roofing membranes over time), and the presence of any active nesting activity that affects timing under NSW wildlife law.
Biocidal pre-treatment

Immediately following cleanup and sanitisation, the exclusion installation is completed. The site is physically sealed against re-entry before any new bird activity can begin.
